A practical move-out guide for getting your deposit back

The deposit refund process starts before your last day in the home. A planned handover makes it easier to agree on the condition of the property and any legitimate deductions.

Give notice in writing

Send the notice in the channel mentioned in your agreement and keep a copy. Confirm the expected move-out date, inspection date, and the bank account or UPI details for the refund.

If the agreement requires a specific notice period, calculate it from the date the owner acknowledges your notice.

Prepare for the handover inspection

Clear personal items, settle utility bills, and photograph the unit after cleaning. Record meter readings and keep the final electricity, gas, internet, or maintenance receipts.

Ask the owner or manager to share a written deduction list if they plan to retain any amount.

  • Move-out photos and video
  • Final meter readings and paid bills
  • Keys, access cards, parking tags, and inventory items
  • Written confirmation of inspection findings

Share your experience after it is settled

A factual review helps the next tenant understand how the deposit and handover were handled. Include what happened, the outcome, and any useful context without sharing personal information you do not want public.

Evidence can help RentRemedy moderate a review, while public reviews focus on the rental experience.
